United Way Comes Up Short; Blames Mining Company
Wednesday, January 6, 2010- More than 27 non-profit partner agencies of the United Way of the Great Basin have been notified that annual fundraising efforts are virtually non-existent; the Executive Director of the agency is blaming Newmont Mining Corporation for failing to come through with an employee workplace campaign. According to a press release issued by Carol Huether, the annual United Way giving campaign that funds some 60 social service-programs in five northeastern Nevada counties, has raised about 150-thousand-dollars toward a one-point-six million dollar goal. According to the United Way, the mining company failed to participate in an annual workplace campaign, an effort initiated last September but that was “postponed repeatedly.”
Newmont spokeswoman Mary Korpi said that while Newmont and United Way have had a partnership since the 1990’s, the mining company began encouraging United Way to diversify future fundraising as early as last year. Historically, 85-percent of the local United Way annual campaign has been funded by Newmont and employees who last year contributed a combined one-and-a-half-million dollars. According to United Way officials, the agency dispersed some one-point-four million dollars in grants in 2009.
